Is this the same author? Laurann Dohner has been a good writer in the past; her books get a little repetitve, and often the 3/4 mark is pretty cookie cutter with her, but this book is the best in the series. Personalities are explored, the heroine has a family and friends she speaks with, believe it or not, so is an established character in her own right. The chemistry between Vanni and Smiley was very well done and believable. Since the first, I had wanted to read about a heroine coming from one of the zealot groups (more, please! I love the tension this brings). The main characters are very likable, and I love the brief emergence of previous characters, without them overwhelming the story.
I finished the book pretty quickly, and will probably read it again after work tonight. I am very impressed with this book; it is much better than Darkness (not that that was a bad book, just kind blah to me).
I don't know if Smiley just resonated with the author more, but he was a refreshing relief from angst, and his interactions with other species are more developed, so we see more friendships, allowing secondary characters to be more fleshed out and giving more depth to the story. My complaint with her work in the past is that few characters are introduced, so it is obvious who is relevant to the story, but there are so many more brought in, and not even characters that will be future main characters, I would assume. The only examples coming to mind are the followers at Gregory's house and the shopping event in town, but they do a great job of preventing tedium, and keeping a story fresh. This is a wonderful story. I can't even compare it to Fury, the first in the series. The improvement is remarkable. Absolutely worth the buy

Smiley New Species Book 13 edition by Laurann Dohner Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
What a complete change of pace coming from Darkness into Smiley, both five star reads, but the names are synonymous of the stories themselves, of course, since the heroes chose these names for a reason. 13 books into the series and it is still going strong while each story is completely unique and satisfying. I would say any of these books could be read as a standalone, but they're just so good, I would recommend starting at the beginning with Fury, which to date, still remains my personal favorite and lays the foundation for all other installments. Smiley is the first primate species featured in the series and overall, it was great to discover some of the differences about them, but what stood out the most is that is the most romantic and tender of all the books to date.
Vanni is tricked by her fiance into attending an important benefit for her soon to be father in law's "church" which very specifically targets New Species as not only an abomination but a threat to the world. When she discovers she's not there for a romantic weekend getaway, she's seriously pissed off and instead of going to her room, she heads off to the bar where she meets Smiley, a new species. At first, Vanni is nervous because she doesn't want Smiley to know she's with people who are anti New Species, but as the night progresses, they end up connecting really well, until Vanni starts experiencing hot flashes and dizziness. Smiley soon realizes that while they've been sitting together with drinks, they've both been drugged, very specifically with the breeding drug from his Mercile days. From there all hell breaks loose. Smiley is drawn to Vanni and although she seems to be the primary suspect for their drugging, he can't help but believe her innocent.
The story has a kick start and things progress rather rapidly, with plenty of mistrust and danger past the half way point, but then things slow down and progress into a lovely courtship to win Vanni's heart. Smiley remains stalwart and completely supportive of Vanni's innocence and he'll stop at absolutely nothing to protect her. This is not a story of miscommunication or stubborn denial of one's feelings, but a slower progression of getting to know one another and trusting one another to build a lasting relationship. It's a different pace than Ms. Dohner's typical Alpha male role since primates are evidently much more sensitive than canines or felines and quite frankly, this makes me even more eager to read about Jericho. We have a short reunion with Fury, Justice, and Slade along with a quick cameo of Darkness, and I loved how supportive the New Species were in this installment overall. All I can say is, thank you and please keep them coming!
DAY-UM!!!!! That was hot!! Seriously, even knowing that Smiley and Vanni were dosed with the breeding drug didn’t prepare me for the level of sexual intensity that Ms. Dohner unleashed at the beginning of Smiley. Throughout the series, I have adored Smiley. He’s so laidback and personable that he just draws you in (at least me he did). So I must admit that I really wasn’t expecting him to be so … so … sexy. Despite twelve previous books in the series and my familiarity with the possessive and dominating nature of New Species males, I really didn’t expect Smiley to be quite so alpha. Needless to say, Vanni wasn’t the only one that Smiley had squirming. Whew!
As for Vanni, I liked her immediately. Despite knowing people that prove to her that the world has its fair share of a$$holes, she still prefers to look for the good in people. Her fiancé Carl was fortunate in this regard because most women would have hauled off a slapped him during their conversations. Honestly, my palm itched to slap him for her. I felt so bad for Vanni when she learned just how big of a dirt bag he was. But time and time again, Vanni proved that despite appearing as though she were some fragile creature, she was more than capable of stiffening her backbone and taking care of herself when she needed to. I loved that Smiley believed her from the very beginning, unknowingly proving that her habit of seeing the best in people was warranted. That he continued to prove it with each of his actions once she made her way to Homeland just solidified my love for all things Smiley. Of course, I snort-laughed when Jericho told him “You’re Smiley, not Grumpy Ass” when he snarled at the other Species talking to Vanni. It was quite endearing watching Smiley temper his desire for Vanni as he worked to woo her. Of course, the sex just got hotter. I do so love reading Ms. Dohner’s sex scenes.
I really enjoyed the way in which Ms. Dohner had the conflict play out in Smiley. Fans of the series know that there is the always present threat from Mercile as well as that from the hate mongers and religious fanatics as the underlying themes within the series. While the primary focus is the building of the relationship between Vanni and Smiley, the threat, or threats, in this book were doubled as both of these enemies were responsible for the attack this time around. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey to Vanni and Smiley’s happy ending (as if you had any doubt) and am already anxious for the next book in the series. I am especially anxious for Jericho’s story – I really could use another date with a Primate soon. As usual, stellar job Ms. Dohner. My smile muscles thank you for the workout.
