Just like everything David Grann writes, this was a tremendously crafted and entertaining read, absolutely worth anyone's time regardless of your interests. But it was also little more than a couple of magazine articles edited together. I read the entire "book" on a one-hour train commute to work. That's absolutely not worth $11.99, particularly when his full-length "Killers of the Flower Moon" is the same price.EDIT: After writing this review I discovered the original two articles that make up this book are still available on the New Yorker’s website - for free. In other words, you could use the Send to Kindle extension and read the exact same thing for $0 instead of $12. Seems grossly unfair.

The White Darkness David Grann 9780385544573 Books Reviews
I had read The Lost City of Z and Killers of the Flower Moon earlier this year. Both of those were well researched, well written and close to spellbinding, causing me to preorder The White Darkness on with great anticipation. Disappointingly, this booklet is only a well written report on an effort by a driven, obsessive man, it’s relevant historical tie being the gentleman’s father. Feel this is a “cashing in” by an obviously gifted author reading his well earned laudatory press.
I love a good expedition story, especially if it’s true, and this is one of the best that I’ve read. David Grann is a most excellent narrator. If you love true life stories about polar expeditions, then you will love this book! Even if you don’t love them or haven’t read any, you will love this book! The physical book is beautiful, with wonderful illustrations.
I am conflicted as to the rating I will give this book. The story is riveting, the writing is excellent and the ending was, for me, surprising. However, it’s a tiny book - just 142 pages (also physically small). It should not cost $13 (which includes tax). Also, caveat - for those without perfect vision, the page numbers and photo captions (at the top of the pages) are in a very small font. Bottom line, I enjoyed the story, which is the most important thing, right? So, I will give it four stars. As an aside, I loved Grann’s other two books, “Lost City...” and “Killers...”.
I purchased this book because I'm traveling to Antarctica this winter. I was unprepared to be transported so vividly to the vastness and beauty of this continent and the motivations of individuals to conquer it. Yes, it is short but immensely readable. I think it is worth the price.
incredible book. I don't think he should have attempted that trek at his age. The Antartica holds no favorites, its just dishes out its daily portion of ice wind and snow..... Good book I do commend this gentleman's courageous
attempt, close and yet so far. He did what he loved to do.
Since "Killers of the Flower Moon" is one of my favorite books, I eagerly awaited Grann's newest book. Unfortunately this one proved to be a disappointment. It seemed to be an attempt to profit from the success of his last book and was easily finished in a few hours. A tiny book interspersed with photos and blank pages which were used as "fillers", it is basically a magazine piece masquerading as a book. Henry Worsley seems to have been an incredibly determined and intrepid adventurer with a serious obsession with Ernest Shackleton and Antarctica. I do not wish to disparage his accomplishments or his family. However, for a much better book about the hardships of polar exploration I recommend Hampton Sides' "In the Kingdom of Ice". This book is a stocking stuffer at best.
This book was no more than an article printed in the New Yorker. I was very disappointed. This book was a rip off. I love David Grann but he failed on this book. I notice the better reviews come non verified purchases hmmmm
