Cried like a baby! But this was such a sweet ride--although Lucas' journey was bumpy in places --he and we found his life to be well worth it! Sawyer was well worth it, worth everything! And Stephens made you feel it all. It made you ache with the heartache, defeat, and brilliance that was Lucas' life. All that he and Sawyer went through was hard on the tear ducts but beautiful and filled with endurance, acceptance, and love. What a monumental find. Let me just tell you this book, the feels. I didn't even know this book existed until recently, but since I am going to be meeting SC Stephens in a few days I wanted to read it. I was blown away.
Lucas West as the driver in a car accident that killed his best friends the summer before his senior year of high school. The story begins with us meeting a grieving Lucas and seeing how going back to school in his small town is pure torture. That is until the new girl sees something in him and wants to help him find his way back out of his own personal hell.
My heart completely broke for the all the characters. I didn't feel like anyone was without blame and everyone was experiencing heartache, but that's life and it's not always pretty. I love a book that makes me feel and Collision Course broke my heart on 100 different levels. This is more than a love story, it's a story of heartache, loss and forgiveness. I highly recommend, but be ready with the tissues!
I feel like at times this book seemed to drag but then there were times that it felt rushed in places. I will say that I would have liked to have seen more of Lucas and Sawyer together as a couple. I feel like for most of the book we are part of Lucas's grief and I would have liked to seen more of him not so depressed.
I won't lie, at times this was a hard book to get through. Seeing the pain that Lucas was going through on a daily basis was hard to get through at times. I just wanted to hug him and let him know that things would eventually get better. I will say that SC Stephens was able to convey the depth of his pain and anguish masterfully. I felt Lucas's pain and I hurt along with him.
I will say that even though the subject matter of Collision Course was hard to get through at times, I was glued to my . It was hard to put down. I wanted to know the outcome of Lucas and Sawyer and if Lucas would be able to get past the accident and his grief. I don't want to say that I enjoyed this book as that feels a bit morbid but I do feel like I was able to connect with it and it left me wanting to read more from SC Stephens in the future.
Lucas West is terrified about starting his senior year of high school, and not because of all those college application essays he has to look forward to writing, but because over the summer, he was involved in a car accident that took the life of his best friend Darren, his best friends' girlfriend Sammy, and his own girlfriend Lillian. Contrary to popular gossip in town, Lucas, who was behind the wheel at the time of the crash, was not drunk. Lucas' fear in starting his senior year is continuing on without his friends and how he will survive the terrible gossip that surrounds him. On his first day back, his day goes from bad to worse, as EVERYONE has already tried him and found him guilty, teachers included. Lucas has grown up in a smalll town in Oregon, where everyone has known you your entire life. What was once a blessing is now seen as a curse, because people who know Lucas, and know that he abstains from alcohol, are now convinced that he is the town drunk, and was drunk when he drove off the road and down an embankment.
Sawyer is new to school, and is dealing with not only being the new girl in town, but a new girl with a past, one that she will not let anyone in on.
Lucas and Sawyer bond almost instantly, seeing as she is the only person in town willing to believe that Lucas was not drunk the night of the accident, but that the car hydroplaned and he panicked and hit the brakes, which caused him to skid out of control and off the road. Their forged friendship helps Lucas stay grounded, but where Sawyer wants to move on with her life with Lucas, Lucas clings to his dead friends in his dreams, with the hopes of keeping them alive that way. Lucas' reluctance to let anyone know that he actually remembers that fateful night where he was the sole survivor is allowing the public to believe the worst in him.
It takes Sawyer and a few horrible events at school to allow Lucas to open up to the grief counselor and finally admit that his friends are gone because it was an accident, and not his fault.
Having read the Thoughtless trilogy by S.C. Stephens, I am familiar with her writing, and I know that she does not wrap everything up neatly and quickly. Her books are long, and they feel long, but the emotions in them are real and she makes you feel as if the characters are real people and the events that are happening to them, are happening to you. While there are some sexually graphic scenes in this book, this is a true young adult novel about mistakes, responsibility and forgiveness. Something that all high school students should read about, especially since we are not invincible, no matter what we think when we are young.
